Writer of the epochal works, the Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand was one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century. With her ease of erudition, she is one of few great intellectuals on whom many may successfully rely to make sense out of our existential confusion. Here is the collection of some of my favorite Ayn Rand quotes.
Ayn Rand Quotes on HAPPINESS and ACHIEVEMENT:
Achievement of your happiness is the only moral purpose of your life, and that happiness, not pain or mindless self-indulgence, is the proof of your moral integrity, since it is the proof and the result of your loyalty to the achievement of your values.
Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swamps of the not-quite, the not-yet, and the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists.. it is real.. it is possible.. it’s yours.
My happiness is not the means to any end. It is the end. It is its own goal. It is its own purpose.
If you don’t know, the thing to do is not to get scared, but to learn
A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others.
People create their own questions because they are afraid to look straight. All you have to do is look straight and see the road, and when you see it, don’t sit looking at it – walk.
I have put up some Ayn Rand quotes on the walls of my room. This is one of them!
Freedom (n.): To ask nothing. To expect nothing. To depend on nothing.
I started my life with a single absolute: that the world was mine to shape in the image of my highest values and never to be given up to a lesser standard, no matter how long or hard the struggle.
Every man builds his world in his own image. He has the power to choose, but no power to escape the necessity of choice.
“The man who does not value himself, cannot value anything or anyone.
Happiness is that state of consciousness which proceeds from the achievement of one’s values.
These two are my favorite of all the Ayn Rand Quotes
The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me.
Throughout the centuries there were men who took first steps, down new roads, armed with nothing but their own vision.
Though I am highly critical of the way the female protagonists (Dagny’s character too) are portrayed in her novels, no writer that I know of, has been able to philosophize, on love and sex, so well as Ayn Rand. I hold her ideal very close. Just read the following Ayn Rand Quotes and you will appreciate it too:)
Love is blind, they say; sex is impervious to reason and mocks the power of all philosophers. But, in fact, a person’s sexual choice is the result and sum of their fundamental convictions. Tell me what a person finds sexually attractive and I will tell you their entire philosophy of life. Show me the person they sleep with and I will tell you their valuation of themselves. No matter what corruption they’re taught about the virtue of selflessness, sex is the most profoundly selfish of all acts, an act which they cannot perform for any motive but their own enjoyment – just try to think of performing it in a spirit of selfless charity! – an act which is not possible in self-abasement, only in self-exultation, only on the confidence of being desired and being worthy of desire. It is an act that forces them to stand naked in spirit, as well as in body, and accept their real ego as their standard of value. They will always be attracted to the person who reflects their deepest vision of themselves, the person whose surrender permits them to experience – or to fake – a sense of self-esteem .. Love is our response to our highest values – and can be nothing else.
Love is the expression of one’s values, the greatest reward you can earn for the moral qualities you have achieved in your character and person, the emotional price paid by one man for the joy he receives from the virtues of another.
I swear, by my life and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.
To say “I love you” one must know first how to say the “I”
I could die for you. But I couldn’t, and wouldn’t, live for you
If you tell a beautiful woman that she is beautiful, what have you given her? It’s no more than a fact and it has cost you nothing. But if you tell an ugly woman that she is beautiful, you offer her the great homage of corrupting the concept of beauty. To love a woman for her virtues is meaningless. She’s earned it, it’s a payment, not a gift. But to love her for her vices is a real gift, unearned and undeserved. To love her for her vices is to defile all virtue for her sake – and that is a real tribute of love, because you sacrifice your conscience, your reason, your integrity and your invaluable self-esteem.
Ayn Rand Quotes on reason
Reason is not automatic. Those who deny it cannot be conquered by it. Do not count on them. Leave them alone.
The hardest thing to explain is the glaringly evident which everybody had decided not to see.
So you think that money is the root of all evil. Have you ever asked what is the root of all money?
Contradictions do not exist. Whenever you think you are facing a contradiction, check your premises. You will find that one of them is wrong.
It only stands to reason that where there’s sacrifice, there’s someone collecting the sacrificial offerings. Where there’s service, there is someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice is speaking of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master.
There are two sides to every issue: one side is right and the other is wrong, but the middle is always evil.
Civilization is the progress toward a society of privacy. The savage’s whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of his tribe. Civilization is the process of setting man free from men.
The worst guilt is to accept an unearned guilt.
Evil requires the sanction of the victim.
There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: the fashionable non-conformist.
From the smallest necessity to the highest religious abstraction, from the wheel to the skyscraper, everything we are and everything we have comes from one attribute of man – the function of his reasoning mind.
To arrive at a contradiction is to confess an error in one’s thinking; to maintain a contradiction is to abdicate one’s mind and to evict oneself from the realm of reality.
Achieving life is not the equivalent of avoiding death.
A desire presupposes the possibility of action to achieve it; action presupposes a goal which is worth achieving.
Ayn Rand Quotes on WEALTH :
Money is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driver.
Run for your life from any man who tells you that money is evil. That sentence is the leper’s bell of an approaching looter.
Money is the barometer of a society’s virtue.
The purpose of morality is to teach you, not to suffer and die, but to enjoy yourself and live.
Wealth is the product of man’s capacity to think.
Only the man who does not need it, is fit to inherit wealth, the man who would make his fortune no matter where he started.
Money demands that you sell, not your weakness to men’s stupidity, but your talent to their reason.
Ayn Rand Quotes on GOOD, EVIL and ATHEISM :
God… a being whose only definition is that he is beyond man’s power to conceive.
Ask yourself whether the dream of heaven and greatness should be waiting for us in our graves – or whether it should be ours here and now and on this earth.
Why do they always teach us that it’s easy and evil to do what we want and that we need discipline to restrain ourselves? It’s the hardest thing in the world–to do what we want. And it takes the greatest kind of courage. I mean, what we really want.
If any civilization is to survive, it is the morality of altruism that men have to reject.
When I die, I hope to go to Heaven, whatever the Hell that is.
A building has integrity just like a man. And just as seldom.
Do not ever say that the desire to ‘do good’ by force is a good motive. Neither power-lust nor stupidity are good motives.
